PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP IN EDUCATION

A satellite television entertainmet company, Multichoice Nigeria, has donated 10 education resource centres to secondary schools in Borno State as part of its contribution to the development of education in the country. Last week’s donation brings to 161, the number of such centres across 18 states of the federation and the FCT, Segun Fayose, Head, Corporate Communications, Multichoice Nigeria, has said.
AT the launch which took place at the Government College Maiduguri, the donor provided benefiting schools with educationally customised audio-visual equipments that include: television, DVD recorder, satellite dish, decoder and surge protecting equipments to give pupils access to purely educational programmes from specific satellite broadcast channels for endless years at no cost whatsoever. Manuals to assist the teachers and schools on the use and maintenance of the resource centres were also donated by the company.
Ronke Bello, the National Coordinator of Schoolnet Nigeria Project, an implementing partner of the project, said the commissioning marked the sixth phase of the Multichoice Resource Centre projects that included a three-day teacher-training programme for selected teachers from the benefitting schools. She said, “the teachers were trained as master-trainers to train their colleagues on the use and integration of the Multichoice Education Bouquet to fit their specific learning environments.”
Segun Fayose, Head, Corporate Communications of Multichoice said the company is going into collaboration with multiple partners that included: the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD), the World Bank, Education Trust Fund (ETF), Microsoft, Intel and the Mobile Telecommunications Nigeria (MTN), which has shown interest in the development of modern education in Nigeria through helping secondary school teachers to effectively teach their students using audio visual and technology based teaching aides without going out of school curriculum.
The Borno State Commissioner for Education, Dr Asabe Vilita Bashir, who launched the educational centres, acknowledged the huge investment in knowledge and expertise and highlighted that the adoption of up-to-date modern technologies would enhance and ease teaching and learning in schools and thanked the donors and their partners.
